The Undergraduate Student Government Downtown is a resource for student organizations on the Downtown Phoenix campus of Arizona State University. The student government distributes funds from the student fee budget to student organizations to host events, obtain promotional items and advance professional development.
USGD also assists student organizations with the planning and execution of events across the Downtown campus, as well as hosting Sun Devil Leadership Coalition meetings to form a community between student organizations and help inform student organizations of the funding process and the requirements student organizations must meet to obtain funding.
We are here to help support student organizations continue to prosper on the Downtown Phoenix Campus. The information below is to help you grow and expand your organization while getting the support you need.

The Undergraduate Student Government Downtown is a student organization on the Downtown Phoenix campus of Arizona State University. USGD is committed to serving as a voice for undergraduate students at the university campus, university-wide and legislative levels. USGD operates as one fifth of the Associated Students of Arizona State University, which also includes student governments on the Tempe, Polytechnic and West campuses of ASU as well as the Graduate and Professional Student Association.
Members of the USGD Senate write and propose bills that affect the legislation of the USGD Bylaws. Bills change the operational functionality of the organization are internally effective. Resolutions are statements or initiatives that USGD passes that establish USGD's position on a certain issue, whether it be university, local or nation-wide. Resolutions are voted on by the Senate after the Senate has collected feedback from their respective constituents.
We recommend students to reach out to their senators by email. Students can also directly address USGD at the beginning of Senate meetings. If it is urgent and you don’t know who to specifically contact you can email us at asuusgd@gmail.com and we will get back to you within 48 hours. Finally, students can visit USGD's office on the bottom floor of the Student Center at the Post Office (L1-15). Students can also reach out to our social media acounts.
In USGD, there are so many areas and events to get involved in, so find your passion and become a part of something that gives back to the university! We are always looking for new students to get involved in policy, event planning, and advocacy for your fellow Sun Devils. Applications are taken on a rolling basis.

USGD focuses on advocacy and creating services for the student body. Whereas, high school student councils tend to plan dances and other events, USGD focuses on policy work, special events, and working with student organizations. If you are interested in planning campus wide events check out the Programming and Activities Board on your campus!
You MUST have invoices, quotes, estimates, screenshots, etc. of the content of your funding request. For example, if you are travelling, please send in a screenshot of the amount of your flight that you found online, or if you are purchasing promotional items such as t-shirts, please send in quotes for the t-shirts that the approved vendor sent you. Submitting late invoices is HIGHLY discouraged and if you do not submit any invoices at all, you and/or your organization are at risk of not being approved.
Appeals may be filed against any member of ASASU at any time. An appeal allows an individual to plead her/his case to the respective appellant body. Appeals involving the Undergraduate Student Government are heard by the USG Supreme Court. Appeals involving GPSA are heard by the GPSA Judiciary Committee.
COP is comprised of the five elected Presidents from each of the student government organizations. The COP comes together and collaborates every week to stay updated, act on our priorities and voice feedback on university-wide initiatives, programs, events and issues. This year, with the help of each student government and our student organizations, COP will focus on five areas of priority.
Sustainability: Continue to support Arizona State University’s institutional commitment to lead by example through the sustainable operations of its campuses and improve individual and institutional sustainable habits, that benefit the overall health of our communities, economy, and planet.
Diversity and Inclusion: Supporting a culture of inclusive understanding at Arizona State University where unique intersecting identities are not only recognized but celebrated while remaining committed to the continued growth of services and support for the multidimensional needs of all students.
Civic Engagement: Help students form lifelong habits of social embeddedness through active participation in the community and political affairs to reinforce Arizona State University’s core values of democratic participation and civic leadership.
Academics: Enhance Arizona State University’s knowledge enterprise by strengthening the touch points for students seeking academic support services and eliminating barriers to ensure students have equitable opportunities for academic engagement on all locations.
Resources and support: Evaluate and enhance current support services for students and commit to actively increasing the overall awareness, accessibility, and improvement of academic, wellness, and financial resources.
The senate president manages and oversees the operations of the full senate, including but not limited to senate committee operations, student feedback collection, senate initiatives, and official positions of the downtown student body on pertinent issues. The senate president also serves as a liaison between the senate and the executive board and runs organization-wide bi-weekly meetings.
The Government Operation Committee Chair oversees the Senate’s legislation writing process. The position also assists the Chief of Staff in holding USGD members accountable regarding their required duties. The chair additionally serves as the point person for USGD concerning university-wide changes to the Elections Code, revisions to the ASASU Constitution, and other relevant legislation changes.
The operations clerk works closely with the executive board on day-to-day tasks to increase organizational efficiency including the scheduling of meetings, the creation and publication of agendas and minutes, and ensuring a functional workplace. The operations clerk is also responsible for the maintenance of office supplies and ensuring members are properly compensated for their work. Lastly, the operations clerk is responsible for connecting interested students with areas where they can be involved.
The director of appropriations will be responsible for overseeing the annual budget and operations budget. They work with students to ensure funding requests, payments, and reimbursements are in order. The Director of Appropriations will work with senators in reviewing funding requests and abide by Appendix I of the USGD Bylaws.

The director of communications develops all messaging for the USGD via press releases and maintenance of the USGD website. This position also builds and maintain the USGD website and advertises events. The director of communications developa messaging and advertising for the USGD via social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat) and the dissemination of material for organization. Develop messaging material pertaining to USGD business and activities. The director of communications also documents activities of USGD by photographing events. They also design marketing materials and work in order to advertise events around the university.
The director of student outreach assists in connecting the student body to the downtown campus and surrounding Phoenix-metropolitan area by hosting events. The director of student outreach will connect ASU clubs and organizations to the downtown campus. They promote a broad definition of inclusivity and diversity, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, non-traditional students, veterans, and more.
The purpose of the director of diversity and inclusion is to support, protect, and advocate for the safety and success of all students, with a strong emphasis on marginalized groups. They will promote a broad definition of inclusivity and diversity, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, non-traditional students, veterans, and more. Work to bring the Council of Coalitions, multicultural, and inclusive clubs and events that are “based” on the Tempe campus and plan events for the downtown campus.
The director of safety, health and wellness assists in connecting the student body to university health resources on the Downtown campus and will work closely with ASU Health/Counseling Services to better disseminate information about health services to the student body. The director of health and wellness will also plan events with student organizations to promote wellness pertaining to yet not limited to mental, sexual, and physical health.
The director of government Affairs is responsible for obtaining information about policy issues affecting students on the university, local, state, and federal level. This position will also coordinate student voter registration and tracking legislation going through the Arizona State Capitol. The director of government affairs will also provide recommended collective action for the executives and the senate.
